Before the light is reborn within the womb of darkness and the Sun returns, will Winter reverse the curse?

When High Priestess Iris Rose-Thorne bets her granddaughter’s womb in a broom flying contest – and loses, Winter wonders where the real danger lies: from the Witch Hunters she fled from far North or her shady grandmother?

Winter finds safety with Turmeric of the Wormwood clan. His eagerness to protect her warms her frozen heart. Only – her love for him defies her clan.

Can Winter Rose-Thorne and Turmeric Wormwood have a future together – despite the Segregation Curse of Old, cast by the Elders to preserve ancient clan bloodlines? And with the Winter Solstice approaching, will Winter be able to reverse the curse on her womb? Or will she remain barren?

This story is unique from the very beginning with Winter and her mother coming from the Terrestrial North Pole to a much different atmosphere than they are used to.  Winter and her mother live with her grandmother who wagers Winters womb with another witch clan. With the help of friends Winter tries to reverse the curse. I really ENJOYED this book! I loved all the characters, the plot, the descriptiveness, the romance, well let’s just say I enjoyed everything!!

Winter has so many personalities such as being brave, strong, kind,a goody two shoes, spunky, passion, self-determine, loving, and just an average teenager. Winter really impresses me by defending herself from her wicked grandmother. She gives her grandmother a good beating in order to protect herself. She really works hard at making a name for herself trying to reverse the curse that it may reward her in the future.

Turmeric is a young witch from a different clan than Winter, but he and his friends adopt her into their group. He knows about the curse placed upon her and he wants to help her reverse it. Finding ways to reverse the curse causes Turmeric and Winter to become closer and develop feelings for one another. I really liked how the author developed their relationship and how their relationship continued to improve. I really thought it was nice that you made clear in the book that love is not just about kissing. There is so much more love! I really took that to heart, because I believe it’s true. But I liked how you showed that through Turmeric and Winter’s relationship.

Another reason that I really like this book is because it does not have a deep and dark storyline. Of course, it has its evil moments but the rest is light and fluffy. It’s absolutely a quick and enjoyable read. If you like witches, a little mystery, and a good group of friends then give this book a try! Daisy Kirkwood has only just escaped her small-town life and run away to New York City, the land of last-minute secret gigs at famous musical venues, when she’s kidnapped by aliens. Unfortunately, no one ever writes about how to handle alien abduction in those fancy NYC guidebooks.

Griffin and Dev are supermassively sexy aliens from a politically and environmentally troubled planet who arrive on Earth with very little knowledge about human ways other than what they learned from a wayward E! News signal. Their mission is to pretend to be the most influential people on the planet—English pop stars, of course!—and gain the help of a powerful secret society. Upon arriving, they abduct Daisy Kirkwood, a nerdy young woman who loves music but could seriously use a bit of help in the love-life department. Though Griffin and Daisy initially squabble, neither can deny the intergalactic sparks whenever they’re too close to each other. Together, they must face murderous aliens, cultural misunderstandings, bad backup musicians, and the dark side of fame and the media, all set against a tight deadline…

Part High Fidelity, part Bridget Jones’ Diary, part Doctor Who, Dating an Alien Pop Star is a sexy romantic comedy.

This is a cute little story about two aliens who come to earth to gain the attention of a secret society, to win the wager that Griffin has with his father. On Earth, they meet a corky woman named Daisy Kirkwood and they take her into their custody into helping Griffin become a pop star.  If there is ever a time that we are abducted by aliens I hope I go in the way that Daisy Kirkwood did. I really enjoyed the modern day time frame this story takes place in. I really liked how the author added her personality to the story and it definitely shows! I like Griffin who is an alien, and then there are times I cannot stand him. Griffin has a personality that I cannot even begin explaining! He is comical, conceited, cocky, he has his sweet moments, and oh did I mention a fashion diva! I really love the two quotes below that you added to your book! I laughed a good five minutes after reading these.

“Griffin marches over to me. “You have singing plates here? I haven’t seen any singing plates. Where are they? Why don’t I hear them?” “No. I’m just making a Disney movie reference.” ” Disney! Oh, I’ve heard of him.” Griffin shrugs and walks away having clearly lost interest in me.”

“You have no right to anything on my planet. I can call the president for backup if I want to. And Will Smith. And Jeff Goldblum.”

Griffin acts immature for a good portion of the book. I really wanted him to grow up and act like a man.Even though he did buy Daisy some clothes and thought about her at times, I wanted him to act like he was there to save the world instead of an annoying brat. There were parts of the book that took me a while to get through, they seemed to linger on me. The beginning pulled me in as well as the first couple chapters, but there were some chapters like when Griffin has an interview at the studio and practicing with a new band at the recording studio that seemed to go on and on and I had to re-read them because I zoned out.

This story gave me so many mixed feelings. I would be enjoying the book and laughing at the conversations Griffin and Daisy would have and the little inserts the author added, and then I just was could not stay with it, and I think it’s how  Griffin is written. Always wanting someone to dress him, waiting on him hand and foot, ordering his food, and watching him constantly, I feel he could have been an amazing character if he was more mature with some of corkiness.

A mad king. An escaped slave. One warrior to save the realm…

When Asherah, stripped of both her memory and her dignity, learns that King Sahlgren is responsible for her torment it nearly breaks her. Instead, she leads her fellow slaves to freedom. More prisons are scattered across Parthalan, and Asherah vows to burn them all.

Caol’nir, a warrior descended from the gods, is sworn to serve and defend the king. Then a priestess is murdered, and Caol’nir learns that Sahlgren is to blame. Determined to stop the king, sacred oath or no, Caol’nir joins Asherah’s rebellion.

What Caol’nir doesn’t know is that Sahlgren has promised the demon lord a woman of rare and singular beauty, a woman whose abilities are rumored to rival the sun god’s themselves…a woman Caol’nir knows all too well.

Thank you, Jennifer, for allowing me to review your book. Let me say you have successfully made me depressed, but will discuss that later on. When I read your summary I was so excited expecting something to be full of action and suspense, boy was I wrong. Congratulations on totally surprising me with all the romance! I love the affection between Alluria and Caol’nir and Asherah and Lormac. Not only did I love the romance, I loved your characters. They were genuine with personality, tough with a side of sweetness, and strong with a hint of delicateness.

“I didn’t think I needed to,” he said. “But if you need it said, I love you. So much so I would relinquish my lands, my birthright… everything. If it meant I would have you.”

Asherah is a young faerie who wants to seek revenge on the king for enslaving her. She becomes the leader of the slaves that she saves from the dojas. The one characteristic that stood out to me was that Asherah did not choose to be the leader and she did not want to be their leader. The ones who were slaves wanted her to be due to her bravery, determination, strength, and her skills. Instead of turning down the slaves, Asherah continued being their leader without complaining about it. She is a true leader marching her people into the city to make things right again.

My other favorite character is Alluria. She is one of the most sweetest characters in the book in my opinion. She falls in love with Caol’nir her guard which is against her vow to the gods. But Caol’nir returns the feelings for her. She goes to the gods to break her vow to be with the man she loves. How romantic is that! Instead of the man fighting for the woman he loves, the woman is fighting for the man she loves by giving up her whole life. Love this twist!

Even though I like this book, it did take some time to get into it. I kept waiting and waiting for it to develop. So if your the type of person who likes the slowness then you will have no problem, but if you’re like me and want to jump into the book right away, stay with it! I wished we saw the wickedness of the king more. We are told about it, I just wish he felt more like an enemy. Now I will not spoil this, but WHY WHY WHY WHY did you have to kill off that one certain character?!?! Totally depressed and took me by surprised! You could not let it end with happily ever after, could ya?

The Young Elites by Marie Lu

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

Want action? Want romance? Want to yell at all the characters in the book? If you answered yes to all these questions then this book is for you.  Marie Lu has created a world full of imperfect people with abilities to change the world. The only thing that lingers is, is the change for the good or the bad? I love the majority of the characters and their awesome abilities. The book can pull you right in like you’re there with the characters watching everything.

Killed her father, ran away, ratted out by sister, caught and thrown into prison, saved by a handsome guy, tossed into training, sneaking out, traitor, fighting to save sister, and fighter all describe what happens to Adelina. Now lets talk about this sister relationship. Adelina was RATTED OUT by her sister Violetta! How could her own sister do that to her?? And then have to turn around and save her. What the heck! Then Violetta tells Adelina that she was the reason she never experienced her powers around her father because she had the power to take hers away! Talk about family drama! But at the end of the book Adelina realizes that she needs Violetta more then she will ever know. I’m certain these two will mend their relationship and stand by one another.

Enzo, Enzo , Enzo you stole my heart. One of the many dream guys that I have. Compassionate, sweet, nice, caring, strong, minded, stern, and patient are qualities that he has. Trying to teach Adelina how to use her powers to help him and the rest of the elites over throw the queen and king, so Enzo can retake his throne. He falls for Adelina. In his eyes she is beautiful and faithful. I really wished that Adelina told Enzo that she needed his help in saving her sister instead of going behind his back.

I do not like Raffaele. I’m sorry to those who do. He comes off to nice and the way he acts throws me off. He takes Adelina under his wing showing her all the ins and outs. I feel like he is using her to gain understanding of her powers to use her later on for his advantage. He wants Enzo to kill her before her powers become out of control. But this is not the first time Raffaele insists Enzo to kill one of the elites. It just has me curious.

There were a few scenes where the rest of the elites show off their powers, but I wish there were more interactions with them showing off their powers in a more unique way.

After an epidemic spreads through the country, Brooklyn Harper’s high school years come to an abrupt end…

Implanted in a rural camp, Brooklyn and her friends are cut off from their families and the outside world. Each day is filled with combat training to assure their safety against the crazed, belligerent, and deadly— those infected with a mysterious virus.

As if the world couldn’t get any crazier, a letter ups the insanity…

After being assured day after day that the world outside their little camp had been compromised, Brooklyn’s cabin-mate, Dawson Winters, finds a letter that turns everything they’d known upside down. There is a world outside the trees that surround their camp, and the virus they’d all come to fear seems non-existent.

Determined to see it herself, Brooklyn plots with others to attempt an escape…

On the outside, Brooklyn finds the world is as normal as ever. But when they are attacked in the city, they dispose of their attackers far more efficiently than any normal human. Is there more to Brooklyn and her friends than just being highly trained?

Betrayal, love, death, and a powerful sense of camaraderie lead Brooklyn and her friends to fight for their life, their freedom, and most of all, each other.

Taylor, it was a pleasure reading your book. When I read books I like to vision the setting, the characters, and what is happening in my head. This book is full of descriptions that helped to enhance the vision more clearly.

“It wasn’t dark yet, but the sun was starting to set over the horizon and turned the sky into a palette of watercolors. Oranges melted into purples, and rose golds collided seamlessly with dark navy blues.”

Lets me talk about some characters real quick. Brooklyn and Gabriel are best friends who have each others back. The romance between Brooklyn and Porter gave me the awws. Throughout the book, I was like just tell him you like him! Brooklyn knows Porter held back  information but she continues to trust, confide, and finally let herself fall for him. Dawson and Gabriel’s relationship was sweet as well. When Dawson shoots the Surro of Gabriel he shows no emotion and continues to lead his friends to Seattle. It tore my heart out when Dawson confided in Brooklyn of how he really felt for Gabriel.

I also enjoyed the dialogue between the characters. It took me back to the good old days when a bunch of my friends and I got together. They are truly likable characters who act their age. I like the fact that they all try to stay together. No one is wanting to go separate ways. They work as a team to decide on what their next step is and I think that is a great aspect of the book.

Although the story can be a quick read it just seemed to drag. There were times when I felt the story was being told to me instead of laying everything out for me to understand as I was reading. There are some unanswered questions that I want to know the answer to. Did Brooklyn and her friend’s parents know they were injected and how did they get injected by some stranger?

I wished the author added more suspense and surprise to the story. While reading I could tell what was going to happen next. The author gave it away while leading up to the conflict. I would say when leading up to a conflict give it a twist to throw people off, that way it will grab their attention and want to keep reading.

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

WHAT A STORY! I will probably say this a lot about books that I read, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this one. Let me start by saying Laia is a beast. She is very strong, brave, and very confident in trying to save her brother. Sold to the Commandant as a slave and a spy for the Rebels has put Laia in a tight spot. With time running out who can she really trust? Can she trust Elias Veturius, the Commandant’s son or the boy who once knew her father in the Rebels? My money is on Veturius! The chemistry between these two is impeccable!

” I want to ask her to dance. I want to touch her skin and talk to her and pretend that I’m  just a normal Tribal boy and she’s just a normal Scholar girl.”

Veturius is in a tight spot as well, between choosing Laia or Helene. Helene and Veturius have known each other since they were born, and Helene shows Veturius her feelings for him, but he is too conflicted to see them. Not only is he deciding which girl he loves, but he wants his freedom from the Masks and most important from his mother. Veturius has his moments where he seems like a fully developed character and other times he lacks that factor. Veturius is such a sweet, smart, composed, fun, and protective character when he is fully developed. This Veturius has captured my heart and he will capture yours as well.

The story was full of adventure, sadness, and moments that made me cringed . I always like to guess while I’m reading who the antagonists are in the story. With this book, I had so many guesses that I could not keep up if I was right or not. You can tell the author really took her time coming up with this story and trying to develop her characters lives carefully, and the creatures she uses in the trials.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and I CAN NOT wait till the sequel comes out at the end of this month. The only thing that got to me is that the beginning is slow but once you get past the first few chapters everything starts to come together and it just pulls you in.
